Samantha Stott:
Just Passing By

Flowers have inspired artists for centuries and have been represented in countless ways.   It is only natural that a flower would be an alluring and enticing subject.   They speak directly to the way visual artists work and represent beauty, colour, texture and light in a way that no other subject can.   As objects, flowers are loaded with symbolism.   The garden is full of metaphors for living and is a representation of the most beautiful and memorable moments in life, reminding one of the fleeting and delicate nature of all living things.

My inspiration comes from my perennial garden. With each passing day there is a cycle of growth and decay in the garden. I paint these moments to capture them in time because they will never exist again. I work with my subject in a bold manner to help emphasize the qualities of each petal, the endless diversity of colour, light, movement and shape and to pause a moment in time, as it passes by.
